Miller, Jay

Jay Miller is artistic director and founder of The Yard Theatre. His great-grandfather fled the Russian pogroms with his family, and settled down in London’s East End Jewish community, where Jay Miller’s father grew up. With its eccentric programme, The Yard has become an important space for experimental theatre and emerging artists. Its success has won the theatre multiple awards, and its shows have been turned into television series, transferred to the National Theatre, and toured the United Kingdom. In 2015 and 2018, Josh Azouz’s plays The Mikvah Project and Buggy Baby both premiered at The Yard, directed by Jay Miller and Ned Bennett, respectively. Other successful plays include Beyond Caring, directed by Alexander Zeldin in 2015. With Rita Kalnejais’ This Beautiful Future, Miller directed the story of two German and French teenage lovers who spend their last night together in the discarded home of a Jewish family as British troops advance towards Normandy. In spring 2019, Jay Miller presents a female-led revival of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.
