Barry Davis was an actor and Yiddish scholar who was born in London in 1945. He studied history and Yiddish in London, Vienna, and New York. Davis lectured in Modern European History and taught Yiddish language and literature. He wrote widely on Yiddish literature and worked on films and in the theatre. His expertise was especially called upon when a film needed an adviser on Yiddish. Davis also became the chairman of the Mameloshn Ring, a London-based group promoting an interest in Yiddish. He was editor of the Jewish Quarterly in the 1980s and interviewed Harold Pinter in 1991. Barry Davis died in 2017.
